Caring for Carers in Luton

31 January 2019

A project providing support for those caring for chronically ill or disabled family members at home is now available in Luton.

The Carers Wellbeing Project offers a series of workshops to support carers’ physical, social and emotional wellbeing, along with a wide ranging programme of practical help.

Run by the Disability Resource Centre in Poynters Road, Luton, the free workshops are available to unpaid carers who are registered with a Luton GP. The project includes workshops on meditation, stress management, mindfulness and relaxing art, as well as support with healthy eating and fitness and practical help with money management and benefits advice.

Sessions at the Disability Resourse Centre are also available for people who receive care, to allow their carers to attend the workshops.

A carer who has already attended one of the workshops said: “I enjoyed the Empowerment course because as a carer I often feel powerless when dealing with agencies. The course is helping to develop my skills, my self-confidence and self-esteem when dealing with statutory agencies about caring issues.”

The project is funded by NHS England in partnership with Luton Council and Luton Clinical Commissioning Group (LCCG).

Dr Nina Pearson, Chair of LCCG, said: “With people living longer we are seeing more and more people in Luton becoming carers, looking after family members who would otherwise need residential care. Their selfless dedication to improving the quality of life and wellbeing of their loved ones makes a vital contribution to community care.

“It’s important their efforts don’t go unrecognised and that they are given the support they need to look after those in their care and themselves. The Carers Wellbeing Project is a valuable addition in providing that support.”
